Luis Buñuel: Our Father who art in Hell
Atheist, provoker, fetishist, anticlerical, antifascist, blasphemer, necrophile… The incendiary 28-year-old man who slits the eye of a submissive woman with a razor is the same 60 or 70-year-old man who parodies The Last Supper during a heterodox beggar’s orgy, who imagines with a smile the shooting of the Pope, who pictures the married woman as a prostitute or sits down the high bourgeoisie to lunch on toilet bowls. The key to Buñuel’s Universe must be traced through his life and work: from the drum beating during the Holy Week in his native Calanda to his friendship with Lorca and Dalí at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, from the avant-garde Paris to the Republican Spain, from Hollywood to his forty years of Mexican exile.

Oscarwinnaar over een groep kansloze straatkinderen in een sloppenwijk in Mexico-City. Na zijn ontsnapping uit de jeugdgevangenis, probeert El Jaibo samen met een stel vrienden de blinde straatmuzikant Don Carmelo te beroven. Een paar dagen later vermoordt hij, in bijzijn van Pedro, de man die verantwoordelijk is voor zijn veroordeling. Vanaf dat moment zijn de levens van El Jaibo en Pedro op tragische wijze verbonden. Rauw en ontroerend verhaal over gebrek aan liefde, over vriendschap en solidariteit, dat destijds in Mexico veel stof deed opwaaien en wordt gezien als één van de belangrijkste films uit het oeuvre van Buñuel.
